Nissan began efforts to move production to the United States on Tuesday by manufacturing the 2021 Rogue in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Nissan predicts the Rogue’s long-standing popularity will lead to its “turnaround as the company’s top-selling U.S. model,” according to their press release.
Corporate Vice President Michael Colleran stated in an interview with Fox Business that money was no object for establishing the American plant.
“It’s not about being more expensive to build here in the U.S. We have a great manufacturing facility here in Smyrna that builds very competitive vehicles. 7,000 men and women of Nissan, Smyrna Plant build the all-new Rogue, and we start production today.”
Nissan’s Rogue model is the most popular, which made it the primary choice for manufacturing the 2021 version in America. The Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant, established in 1983, produces more vehicles than all other plants in America. Of the 2.8 million Rogues sold in the U.S. since its inception 13 years ago, the Smyrna plant built nearly 1.1 million.
“Our U.S. manufacturing team rallied together like never before to overcome unprecedented challenges that could have impacted this moment,” stated Nissan North America Senior Vice President of Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing Steve Marsh.
The news is a positive turnaround for the community after the pandemic’s economic toll on production earlier this year.
The Japanese automobile manufacturer invested in newer technology such as “cobots” – collaborative robots that lessen strain and improve safety for workers – and virtual reality for the American-manufactured 2021 Rogue.
It’s been one of President Trump’s primary economic goals to bring supply chains back to America.
However, Colleran said the relocation wasn’t “a big deal” for their company due to their global production.
Trump congratulated Nissan for its decision.
“Nissan is rolling out it’s 2021 ROGUE from TENNESSEE. Great!”
